Jartypory, Liw Commune, Węgrów County, Mazowieckie Voivodeship, site 2
The settlement of Jartypory is situated on the south-western border of the historical region of Podlasie. Site 2 was first identified in the mid-1970s, but it was not until 1998 that archaeological research could be conducted there. By that time, a significant portion of the site had already been entirely destroyed. The systematic excavations conducted in the preserved northern section of the site yielded a number of significant findings. These included relics of Stone Age and Bronze Age settlements, remnants of an early Iron Age settlement and cemetery, as well as traces of a necropole belonging to the Przeworsk Vulture, which flourished during the Late Pre-Roman and the Early Roman Iron Age (1st century BCE – 1st half of the 2nd century CE). The main part of the site was a cemetery with almost 460 preserved cremations and inhumations of individuals belonging to the Wielbark Culture, dating to the Late Roman Iron Age and the early phase of the Migration Period (2nd half of the 2nd century CE to the beginning of the 5th century CE). The number of burials and their spatial arrangement indicate that this may have been the largest burial ground of the Wielbark Culture so far recorded in Mazovia and Podlasie.
The volume presents a comprehensive account of the historical discoveries and research conducted at the site, accompanied by a detailed catalogue of archaeological objects and their respective inventories. This is complemented by the results of in-depth specialist analyses, including those pertaining to anthropology, archaeozoology, archaeobotany, and the chemical composition of metal alloys. The volume contains 327 plates, comprising drawings and photographs, which illustrate archaeological objects. These are accompanied by an insert which presents a plan of the site, as well as two additional sections. The first of these, prepared by Mariusz Kowalewski, offers a study of flint materials, while the second, prepared by Mirosława Andrzejowska, presents a study of finds from the Early Iron Age.
The publication is the result of the first phase of the project Jartypory nad Liwcem – nekropola lokalnych elit ze schyłku starożytności (Jartypory on the Liwiec River – the Cemetery of Local Elites from the End of Antiquity), conducted by the State Archaeological Museum in Warsaw with financial support from the Ministry of Culture. Furthermore, additional funding was provided by the National Heritage Board, which was derived from the „Ochrona zabytków archeologicznych” (‘Protection of Archaeological Monuments’) programme, by the Mazowieckie Voivodeship Regional Parliament, and earlier, by the National Science Centre (the project Między Wschodem a Zachodem. Cmentarzysko ze schyłku starożytności w Jartyporach nad Liwcem – Between East and West. The Cemetery from the End of Antiquity in Jartypory on the Liwiec River).
This volume is a revised English version of the volume that appeared in 2023 in Polish as volume XII/1 of the series Monumenta Archaeologica Barbarica. Series Gemina.
